A Bird's Eye View

On Saturday our adventure activity was taking a scenic helicopter ride along the beautiful North Kohala Coast of the “Big Island.” The coast here is very rocky and in lots of locations there are sheer cliffs rising 1300’ or more out of the Pacific Ocean. The water falls here are spectacular and there is a rain forest on this side of the island due to the trade winds and the altitude. This side of the island receives over 100” of rain per year, while the side where the photographs of the sea turtles were taken only receives 10” of rain per year. The North Kohala Coast is where many of the scenes for the movie Jurassic Park were filmed. That film’s famous director, Steven Spielberg, loved this area due to the fact it is now uninhabited by people. At one time, people lived in this beautiful canyon area but after a tsunami struck and killed everyone, no one lives there permanently anymore. On our helicopter ride back, we flew over the second largest cattle ranch in the world.
