Several days ago I asked you about Hawaii’s flora (plants). On April 24, 1873 William Smith planted a tree that has made history. The Lahaina Banyan Tree stands in the courtyard of the Old Lahaina Courthouse. The tree reaches a height of 60 feet and measures nearly one-fourth of a mile in circumference. The tree has spread over the area via aerial roots, which when they reach the ground, grow into thick roots. The Banyan Tree is a member of the fig family and originally came from India. The roots of the Banyan Tree thrive on brackish water and grow best at sea level. The Lahaina Banyan Tree is the largest in the United States. (From your Jamestown studies, who didn’t thrive as well by drinking brackish water?)

Wow! That's a big tree! Brackish means that the water is salty and that is why the tree grows best at sea level. The Jamestown settlers didn't thrive as well as the banyon tree on brackish water!
