My husband and I enjoy the sport of geocaching. Geocaching is an electronic scavenger hunt that requires a GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) receiver to detect containers (called Geocaches or caches) anywhere in the world. Before leaving Roanoke, we visited the geocaching internet website to find the GPS coordinates of caches we wished to seek. Todays geocache was hidden in the Puako Petroglyph Archeological Preserve. Hopefully, you will recall the word Heiroglyphics from your 2nd grade studies of Egypt. Petroglyphs are ancient carvings in the lava rock. The word petro comes from the Greek work petros meaning stone. Petroglyphs are found world-wide, and are often (but not always) associated with prehistoric peoples. The Puako Petroglyph site is one of the largest and finest concentrations of the mysterious symbols left in Hawaii. Likely, these Petroglyphs were made sometime between AD 1000-1800. The cache was hidden at the base of a Kiawe tree and had lots of goodies (a geocoin and travelbug). After looking at the Petroglyph, what story do you think the carving was trying to tell?
