We got up at 2:00 am on Tuesday morning and were driven to the summit of Haleakala, a shield volcano that rises 10,000 feet above the surface of the sea. We were there to see the sun rise and my husband was scheduled to ride a bicycle down the mountain. Sunrise was scheduled for 5:53 a.m. but unfortunately we found ourselves engulfed in a cloud! From your water cycle studies, you will be able to predict what the weather conditions were. . .very cold, windy, and rainy. My husband was extremely disappointed as we were unable to peer into the 3,000' deep crater (large basin at its summit) and they moved us down to the 7,000 foot level for his bicycle ride. The most recent volcanic activity on Maui is thought to have occurred about 1790. Based on this history, Haleakala is classified as an active volcano. Can you name an active volcano found on the Big Island?
